Why currents matter

Currents redistribute heat, salt, oxygen, nutrients, and organisms. They are shaped by wind, density differences, Earth's rotation, coastline geometry, and the shape of the seafloor.

Use the Salinity & Density Explorer to build intuition about one part of this system.

Ocean Currents library page summarizes public scientific and institutional material. Values relevant to Ocean Currents may change with dataset, location, season and method, so comparisons should retain those conditions.

Field plan: Ocean Currents

A background explainer retained for context while the site moves toward structured learning resources.

Station 01

System boundary

Follow the density contrasts and forces that move water, then ask whether the observation represents a local event or a persistent circulation feature. Relate that field focus to “Why currents matter” before moving to “Sources checked.”

Station 02

Measurements to log

Pair a second measurement of the same process with a time series with an explicit baseline. Record depth, location, date, units and sampling effort so a change in conditions is not mistaken for a change in the ocean.

Station 03

Change signal

Compare “Sources checked” with “Why currents matter.” Decide whether the pattern represents exposure, response or recovery, and state the observation period needed to tell them apart.
